Media Assessment 2 learner response

1) Type up your feedback in full (you don't need to write the mark and grade if you want to keep it confidential).

WWW: Sanjivani, your overall effort was good. A huge improvement compared to you're last media assessment! Q2 response was spot on - knowledge and understanding of media ownership was clear

Next Steps:

1) Q3 - not covering all areas of both sides of the argument - see mark scheme for further ideas.

2) Q4 - although you are asked to choose a side, consider other media effect theories which are less damaging with examples.

30/43 B

2) Read the mark scheme for this assessment carefully (this has been posted to your exam teacher's Google Classroom). Identify at least one potential point that you missed out on for each question in the assessment.

1) The British flag (Union Jack) constructs a meaning of Great Britain, traditional power and the monarchy. For some audiences, it will also offer connotations of Stormzy’s place as a British cultural icon as it reflects the Union Jack stab-proof vest (designed by artist Banksy) that Stormzy wore for his Glastonbury appearance in 2019.

2) Synergy allows companies to maximise profit from a brand (e.g. Harry Potter) by branching out into other platforms, merchandise or products.

3) Channel 4 reinvests any profits back into programmes – this raises quality and benefits audiences.

4) Two-step flow theory – audiences are more likely to respond to people rather than media institutions so opinion leaders in the media are crucial in influencing opinion and audience responses. Could still have damaging effect depending on political viewpoint or breadth of influence e.g. influencers, celebrities or columnists who court controversy and deliberately seek to offend (Andrew Tate etc.)

3) On a scale of 1-10 (1 = low, 10 = high), how much revision and preparation did you do for this assessment? You may also want to think here whether you had completed all the original blog tasks from last term before doing the assessment.

Out of 10 I believe my effort was about a 7 as I did prepare flashcards and went over them frequently however I didn't practice any questions which could have prevented me from understanding how to apply my knowledge and consolidating all I have revised.

4) Look at your answer for Question 2. Did you manage to write about three different strategies and three different benefits? It's vital you read the question and follow it exactly.

Yes I did but I spent too much time explaining the strategies rather than simply answering the question.

5) Look at your answer for Question 3. Did you follow the question guidance and write about both the BBC and commercial broadcasters? What could you have added to this answer to reach a higher mark?

I did answer both sides of the argument however, I believe I lacked detail in both sides especially in arguments for PSBs so next time I could add and explain more information for both sides.

6) Now look over your mark, teacher comments and the mark scheme for Question 4 - the 20 mark essay question on media effects theory. Write a new paragraph for this question based on the suggested theories/answers in the mark scheme. Make sure it is an extensive, detailed paragraph focused on the question and offering examples from the wider media.

However, the two step flow model believes that the media isn't as damaging as we believe it is as it suggests that we are active audiences who process and are influenced by other parties (opinion leaders) other than just the media. For example, the government of a country could release propaganda but opinion leaders such as modern day influencers or political figures can tell audiences their own opinions which audiences can consider and follow rather than following what the media tell them. This proves that audiences, especially modern ones due to social media, are active and can decide whether they want to accept the intended and possibly damaging meanings that media institutions want audiences to believe in or believe another perspective provided by opinion leaders.
